Hazardous Material(s)

Any hazardous biological agents and toxins; any radioactive or radiological material that emits ionizing radiation; any solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical that is toxic, explosive, flammable, or corrosive, or could otherwise adversely affect the health and safety of the public or the workers or harm the environment. Fuel oil and gases are excluded in the definition of hazardous materials used in this Order.

A substance or material that the Secretary of the Department of Transportation has determined is capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce, and has designated as hazardous under section 5103 of Federal hazardous materials transportation law (49 U.S.C. 5103). The term includes hazardous substances, hazardous wastes, marine pollutants, elevated temperature materials, materials designated as hazardous in the Hazardous Materials Table (see 49 CFR 172.101), and materials that meet the defining criteria for hazard classes and divisions in 49 CFR Part 173.

Those materials that are defined as hazardous in 49 CFR Parts 171-180. Also known as “HAZMAT.”

Any solid, liquid, or gaseous material that is radioactive, toxic, explosive, flammable, corrosive, or otherwise physically or biologically threatening to health.

All hazardous materials, hazardous substances, and hazardous wastes, as defined in the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (Title 49 CFR) and the Environmental Protection Agency regulations (Title 40 CFR).
