SUBJECT: SECRETARIAL SUCCESSION
1. PURPOSE. To establish the Secretarial line of succession in the Department of Energy
pursuant to section 202(a) of the Department of Energy Organization Act, 42 U.S.C.
7132(a).
2. CANCELLATION. Any prior memoranda or other directives prescribing Secretarial
succession are hereby superseded.
3. LINE OF SUCCESSION. The following officials, in the order indicated, shall act as
Secretary of Energy in the event of the absence or disability of the Secretary, until the
absence or disability ceases, or in the case of a vacancy, until a successor is appointed:
a. Deputy Secretary
b. Chief of Staff, Office of the Secretary
c. Under Secretary for Nuclear Security
d. Under Secretary
e. General Counsel
f. Any other Departmental official designated by the Secretary
g. Manager, Albuquerque Operations Office
4. Unless designated pursuant to 3. f. above, no individual serving in an acting capacity in
the positions described in 3. a. through e. above is included in this succession Order.
5. Any official serving as acting Secretary pursuant to this succession Order, during the
period of service as acting Secretary under this Order, may exercise all authority vested
by law in the Secretary.
